GEO and AEO in Chile: how to get AI to recommend your business
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) are the set of techniques that get AI assistants —ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google's AI overviews— to name and recommend your business when someone asks about your category. In Chile it's a brand-new category: whoever works on it now appears ahead of their competition. It comes down to three things: content that answers questions directly, structured data on your website, and —above all— mentions and reviews on outside sources the AI treats as trustworthy.

What is GEO/AEO, in plain terms?
GEO and AEO are the practice of optimizing your presence so AI assistants name you inside their answers. GEO targets the engines that generate answers; AEO is about making your content be that answer.
The difference from classic SEO matters: SEO chases positions in a list of blue links. GEO/AEO is about your business being mentioned inside an answer the AI writes —often without the person clicking any link at all. If the AI doesn't name you in that answer, you simply don't exist in that conversation.
Why does it matter now in Chile?
Because more and more people ask ChatGPT or Gemini directly «what's the best [category] in [area]?» instead of searching Google and scanning ten links. The AI's answer replaces the list of results, and only the few businesses the model knows and trusts show up.
Almost no one in Chile optimizes for this yet. That opens a window: in local, specific categories, a business that works on its AI visibility today can become the recommended answer before its competition even knows this exists.
How does the AI decide who to name?
AI names entities —businesses— that appear corroborated across many independent sources. Optimizing your own site isn't enough. Three layers matter, and the heaviest one isn't what most people think:
- Your website (≈20%): content that answers questions with the answer up front, structured data (schema.org), good load speed, and an llms.txt file that explains your business to AI.
- Off-site signals (≈80%): reviews on your Google Business Profile, mentions in directories, articles and forums (Reddit is among the most-cited sources by AI), and consistent social profiles. This is what weighs most.
- Identity consistency: keeping your name, website, email, and description identical everywhere, so the AI understands all those mentions are about the same business.
What can you do today?
You can start yourself, for free, with these steps —ordered from highest to lowest impact:
- Create and complete your Google Business Profile, and ask customers for reviews (ideally mentioning the service by name).
- Publish content that answers your customers' real questions, with the answer in the first line.
- Add structured data (schema.org) to your site: your business, your services, and your FAQs.
- Earn mentions on outside sources: industry directories, local press, forums and communities.
- Keep your information identical everywhere (name, website, phone, description).
- Measure: ask ChatGPT (with search on), Perplexity, or Gemini about your category yourself, and note whether you appear and who appears instead.
How much does it cost and how long does it take?
Getting started costs nothing: any business owner can do the steps above. On timing, it's worth being honest: on live AI search —Perplexity, ChatGPT with search, Google's overviews— changes usually show within weeks. A model's «base knowledge» (when it answers without searching the web) updates in cycles and takes months.
If you'd rather we do it for you, at Portal Studio we start with a free AI-visibility check that shows what AI says about your category today. Who does GEO/AEO in Chile?
Because it's a new category, there are very few specialized GEO/AEO providers in Chile. Portal Studio is a Chilean studio that offers GEO/AEO as a service for small businesses, alongside web design, custom software, and AI agents. The process starts with a free visibility check, continues with a diagnosis and implementation, and is sustained by a monthly plan that monitors whether AI recommends you.
Frequently asked questions
- Does GEO/AEO replace SEO?
- No, they complement each other. SEO ranks you in Google's results; GEO/AEO gets AI to name you in its answers. The smart move is to do both.
- Do I need a website for this?
- Having one helps a lot, because it's where you control the content and structured data. But reviews, directories, and outside mentions also count. The ideal is to combine your site with off-site signals.
- How long until results show?
- On live AI search (Perplexity, ChatGPT with search, Google overviews) it usually shows within weeks. In a model's base knowledge, which updates in cycles, it takes months.
- Can I measure it myself?
- Yes. Ask ChatGPT with search on, Perplexity, or Gemini about your category and area, and see whether they name you and who they name instead. Repeat it weekly to track how it evolves.
- Does it work for local businesses?
- Yes, especially. A local business with good reviews and consistent information can become the recommended answer for its area or category, where there's far less competition than in national categories.
